The Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCCAP) has been located within the borders of Arden Hills since the city’s incorporation, taking up a 4 square mile section of the 9.4 square mile city. Recently, the Army released 585 acres of the land used for TCCAP, allowing the city to build new residential and commercial areas. The Arden Hills City Council consists of the Mayor and four additional councilmembers. This governing body meets on the second and last Monday of each month for regular meetings as well as convenes for “work sessions” on the third Monday of each month. The council works to efficiently allocate budgets and decide policies to help improve the quality of life for each Arden Hills resident.
First settled in 1850, the territory that would become Arden Hills was part of Mounds View Township. Within the next 50 years, lakes in the area became popular recreational destinations for residents, prompting development of summer homes and cabins, which would eventually be replaced with year-round lake homes. In 1906, Joseph Hackey – a Minnesota state senator – built Arden Farms, from which the city would eventually get its name.
Much industrial growth came with the advent of World War II, when the federal government built an ammunition manufacturing compound within the current city limits, though at the time the city had not yet incorporated. In 1951, Arden Hills was officially organized into a city, and since has grown into a thriving community of approximately 10,000 residents.
