City History

In the 1850s, the Carver town site was first identified as an ideal location for a steamboat barge terminal, which led to the platting of the Town of Carver in 1857. Though later that year an economic depression caused many small towns to collapse in the area, Carver remained strong ā€“ with 35 buildings and even its own school district. The town thrived through the end of the 19th century, but with Prohibition and the Great Depression, Carver took a hit ā€“ with many businesses closing. In the 1960s and ā€˜70s, the town began revitalization thanks to the Carver-on-the-Minnesota Corporation. Since then, Carver has been on the upswing, and is currently home to approximately 5,000 residents.
