City History

Colfax was first settled without a name in 1867 (or 1864, depending on your source), nestled at the intersection of the Red Cedar River and 18 Mile Creek. Soon after the initial founding, a general store, mill, and several other buildings were erected. The settlement was primarily agricultural, with many residents farming rutabagas, prompting some settlers to call the community “Bege Town”. Colfax was officially incorporated with its current name in 1904, and at that time continued to be an agricultural powerhouse. Rutabagas were replaced by potatoes and tobacco, which brought wealth and more settlers to the area. Today, Colfax is home to just over 1,000 residents, and still thrives with its combination of agricultural and manufacturing businesses.
