City History

Willernie, formerly known as Wildwood Manor, began its life in 1914. It was a small community consisting of summer cottages across small lots from an amusement park. Like many other cities during that time, development of the community revolved around railroads. The beauty of the area lured summer tourists, and the city developed quickly, boasting a grocery store, inn, and garage, as well as restaurants and taverns. According to the legend, Ma Barker’s boys lived in Willernie and frequented its dining spots in the 1930’s. The city eventually acquired paved streets, street lighting, sidewalks, and police services, but still remains without industry to this day.
