7 Tips For Buying A Dog Friendly Home

How does one buy a dog friendly home? Since your pup is considered a family member, you will want to find a home with features for dogs. What should you look for and consider?

  1. What sized dog do you have? As with people, dogs age, and stairs become more and more difficult. If your dog isn’t easy to carry you might want to find a home where she wouldn’t need to climb stairs to be with you most of the time. Small dogs are easily carried, but most people don’t want to carry a 100 pound plus dog up and down the stairs all day.
  2. Flooring is an important consideration. Those paws tend to track in a lot of dirt which loves to embed itself into carpeting. Wood floors or tile floors are much easier to clean, however, they are also slippery. Some dogs have a fear of slippery floors, and it is often difficult for older dogs to walk on floors without traction.
  3. Where are the windows? Dogs love to see what is going on outside their home. You might want to find a house where at least some of the windows are low enough for your pup to see outside. After all, a house wouldn’t be a true home without some good nose art on a few of the windowpanes!
  4. Is your dog allowed to roam the entire house? Open floor plans are wonderful, but if you want to keep Fido out of a certain room, there is no door to help you out. The floor plan type is a big consideration with pets.
  5. Yard access is important. Where will your dog be going outside? If she uses the front door, do you want the grass burn on your front lawn? Is there a back door that would be a better option to keep her in the backyard. How about a place for a doggy door, maybe even a dog house?
  6. Is a fenced yard important? Is it important to you to let your dog out in the backyard with no worries? A fenced yard may be the best option. Some HOA’s have rules about fences and types of fences. Before you buy a home, make sure you can install the kind of fence you would like to install for your furry friend.
  7. What makes the best dog friendly home? If your dog is an avid critter hunter, a wooded yard would be ideal. Some dogs are into being warm and cozy, which means she would love a fireplace to curl up and snooze in front of. Water dogs may want a pond, or even a swimming pool.

No matter what home you choose, your dog will love it because she will be living there with you. Nevertheless, keep some of these tips in mind when you move with your pup to help her love the new home even more!
