How To Save On Your Home Energy Costs

Would you like to save money on your home energy costs? Utility bills can add up and take a significant portion of the monthly budget. There are some things you can do to save energy that cost little or nothing, and some that cost more, but will also save you a lot more money down the road.

  1. Save on Water
Fix leaking, dripping faucets. A dripping faucet can waste around 3000 gallons of water a year! Those little droplets really add up!Take shorter showers and choose a shower over a bath to save water. Install an efficient shower head in your shower to save even more water. Efficient shower heads are inexpensive, and easy to install.Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when you have them fully loaded. Not only will you save on water, you will save on the electricity to run the machines.
  2. Save on Electricity
Switch your light bulbs to LED bulbs. Even though LED bulbs may cost more initially, they will last for years and years, as well as save you a lot of money on your electric bill. Some electric companies also offer rebates to customers who purchase LED bulbs.Unplug appliances you are not using. Many things like computers, phone chargers, TV’s, coffeemakers, are always plugged in and are on standby. Just because they are not on does not mean that they are not using electricity. Newer appliances are using a lot less electricity on standby.
  3. Save on Gas
When trying to save on home energy costs, changing how much gas you use can really save some money. Just turning down the thermostat a few degrees can save about 3% on your gas bill but lowering it 10-15 degrees for at least 8 hours can save 10 – 15% on your bill, according to the US Department of Energy. Switch to a programmable thermostat and turn the heat down when you are away during the day, and perhaps turn it down a few degrees during the night when you are asleep.Check the temperature on your water heater. Try turning down the hot water temperature and see if you can live with water that is still plenty hot, but not scalding. If you have a gas water heater, this will save you money over time.If you furnace is over 10 years old, purchasing a new, energy efficient one will also help you save money on your heating costs.
  4. Home Energy Audit
