La Crosse

La Crosse was first settled in 1841 by fur traders and was later incorporated as a city in 1856, named after a game played with sticks that resembled a bishop’s crozier, or la crosse in French. It is positioned on the east side of the mighty Mississippi River in western Wisconsin and to this day remains the largest city on Wisconsin’s western border boasting a population of over 51,000 residents. Home to the University of Wisconsin, Western Technical College, and Viterbo University it is considered a regional technology, medical, education, and manufacturing hub. This waterside city offers the most magnificent landscapes encompassing ancient bluffs, historic monuments, and majestic parks. Visitors can enjoy hiking and biking trails, kayaking, birding, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing, not to mention an abundance of shopping, arts and culture, dining, lodging, festivals, wineries, and breweries to explore.
