10 Simple Summer Cleaning Tips for a Sparkling Home

Summer’s here … and you just realized you forgot to do your spring cleaning. Have no fear!  Our summer cleaning checklist will have your home shining in no time — and with the kids out of school there isn’t a better time to take advantage of extra hands around the house.

1. Master Decluttering

One of the easiest things you can do to keep your house clean this summer is to declutter and organize it. By utilizing storage bins you will see a dramatic transformation in your summer cleaning efficiency. If you’re wondering what to do with those old clothes you don’t wear, identify which can be thrown out and which can be donated!

2. Stop Dirt at the Door

Few things are worse than someone tracking mud into the house and making an even bigger mess (or undoing all your hard work). Consider using a doormat with thick bristles to trap mud and designate a space by the door to leave shoes.

3. Unclog Vents

Vents can contain large amounts of dust buildup among other things such as pollen and dust mites. To take care of these micro invaders begin by removing the vent grilles from the wall and giving them a thorough wipe down; if need be use soap and water to make them shine! Next, grab the vacuum and use the attachments to reach deep into the crevices of the duct. If you want the ducts to be cleaned more thoroughly, consider calling a local professional service for help.

4. Reveal Clear Windows

It’s easy to neglect windows until the morning sun gleams through them and you spot handprints of all sizes on them — Yikes! Easily wash your windows with only a few tools to see a streak free result every time. Things you’ll need:

  • Bucket of water and diluted vinegar
  • Sponge
  • Squeegee
  • Lint-free cloth

Apply the solution with the sponge, squeegee it off, then wipe up any excess with the cloth. This simple method is sure to achieve fast, clear results!

5. Make the Bathroom Sparkle

The most effective way to make a bathroom sparkle is to create a plan. For example, start with the mirrors and sinks, move on to the shower and tub, then the toilet, and finish with a sweep and mop of the floor. Don’t forget to wear some latex gloves to keep cleaning chemicals off your skin!

6. Bust Grill Grime

Tired of the unsightly black buildup on your grill grates? Take care of it with a little elbow grease and a grill brush! For both safety purposes and functionality it’s imperative your grill is in optimal condition. Starting from the grates and working your way to the internals of the grill, give the burners, burner protectors, and bottom guards a scrub down with a bucket of soap and water to bring everything back to life. Lastly, don’t forget to change out your grease tray on the bottom of the grill!

7. Clean the Trash

Do you ever find yourself asking “What’s that smell?” Often times that smell is permeating from your trash can — even after you take the garbage out. Give your can a fresh start by washing it out and disinfecting it. Take it outside and use a scrub brush, a hose, and disinfectant spray to rid it of the odors.

8. Revive Kitchen Appliances

Nothing makes your kitchen sparkle like clean appliances. If Mr. Clean isn’t inviting himself over to take care of the cleaning for you, take on the task with a sponge and 50/50 solution of water and soap. In addition, don’t forget to clean behind your fridge and stove because they’re often the dirtiest places in a home!

9. Freshen up Outdoor Furniture

Take control of the inside and outside of your home by taking out those deck chairs you’ve been thinking about all winter for a good cleaning. Most cushions have laundering instructions on the tag, but for the furniture itself consider using some warm water and a quick scrub.  It also never hurts to update your indoor furniture with some chic new additions.

10. Prevent Pesky Pests

Don’t let pests like bugs and mice make your home their home. For many, the summer months bring sunshine but also an assortment of unwanted critters. If you’re seeing these running around your space consider using traps or pet and child safe indoor sprays to keep them out!
If you follow our summer cleaning checklist, your home will be ready to host barbeques — and even a visit from the in-laws — in no time.
