6 Moving Tips for a Smooth and Organized Move

Moving is not something most people look forward to. If you could blink your eyes and be all settled in your new home, wouldn’t that be nice? Give these 6 moving tips a try when you are getting ready to pack up your belongings to help keep things organized.

  1. Rent a storage container

Even prior to putting your home on the market, start planning your packing strategy. It’s best to reduce clutter, and remove personal items from your home before your home is listed. One great way to get started, is renting a storage container you can keep in your driveway. Pack up items you won’t be needing for a while and put them in the container. Organize the container starting with the first box, to make unloading at your new home easier.

  1. Get a variety of box sizes

Squeezing your belongings into a box that’s the wrong size or shape can make a move even more frustrating. Before you are ready to pack, start collecting boxes when you are out and about, or purchase new ones at the store. Remember that you will be packing items of all different sizes, shapes, and weights so variety is key to making this process easier.

  1. Label each box

Label each box after you finish packing it. Packing can be stressful, but unpacking can be just as daunting so taking the time to carefully label each box can save some headaches down the road. *Pro tip: try labeling your boxes by writing the room in your new home that the box will need to be delivered to so it’s ready to be unpacked right where you need it!

  1. Separate the contents

Pack items going to the same room in your new home in the same box. Don’t mix up the items. Put items for the kitchen together in a box for the kitchen, items for your bedroom in boxes going to your bedroom.

  1. Pack fragile items with paper towels and linens

When packing fragile items such as glassware, and dishes, paper towels are the perfect packing material. Purchase a lot of paper towels for packing. When you unpack your boxes, your items will be just as clean as when you packed them, and can go right into the cupboard. As you unwrap the items, stack the paper towels, and there will be plenty of them to last you for months. Clean towels and linens are also wonderful for padding in fragile boxes.

  1. Ask for help with the kids and pets

If you have small children and/or pets, it might be best to take them to a friend, relative, or day care while you pack up the house. Both small children and pets can be a big distraction and they may become stressed from all the chaos.
